Istanbul → Paris

Paris is at its best in April–June and September–October: mild enough to spend whole days outdoors, and considerably less crowded than July and August, when European holidays swamp the museums and the queues at every headline sight.

Those same shoulder months tend to be the sensible booking target from Istanbul. High summer is when this corridor carries the most leisure traffic in both directions, and if you also need to connect onward from Charles de Gaulle, the peak weeks leave you the least room to rearrange plans if something slips.

If your dates are locked into the summer, give yourself options elsewhere: look at departures on quieter weekdays, check the day either side of your ideal date, and start watching prices early instead of the week before travel. On a corridor with this much through-traffic, the good fares are taken by people who were watching.

France uses the Euro (EUR), so plan your cash and cards before you land rather than at an airport exchange desk. French is the everyday language; English gets you through the tourist core, but a greeting in French is still the difference between a brisk exchange and a friendly one.

Paris sits on UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, and the clock change matters more than you would think if you have a connecting flight or a train booked on the day you arrive. Reset your phone before disembarking and build a little slack into anything scheduled for the first afternoon.

Ground transport is the easy part. A Navigo pass covers every zone for €16.60 a week, which includes the Métro, the bus network and the suburban trains that link Charles de Gaulle with the centre — far less hassle than feeding individual tickets into a machine after a long travel day.

Choose your base by the kind of trip you want. Montmartre is the budget option and feels like a hill village stitched onto the city, with steep lanes, a view over the rooftops and straightforward Métro connections. Le Marais is the mid-range pick and the more practical one if you want to walk to dinner rather than plan a route to it.

The two anchors of a first visit are the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower. Book a timed entry for the Louvre and choose two or three wings instead of trying to see everything; save the tower for early morning or after dark, when the light does most of the work.
